A Book Not to Miss: “A Trick of the Light” by Louise Penny

August 12, 2011

Very few things could bring me out of my flurry of baby preparations (I’m overdue by 2 days and counting!). But, a great book is one of them and I just had to recommend this one to you.

I just finished an advanced reader’s copy of  “A Trick of the Light” by Louise Penny, the 7th book in the Three Pines mystery series. I’m so happy to report that it was every bit as good as I’d been hoping. And that’s saying a lot because Ms. Penny has set a really high bar.

So, why is this series, set in a picturesque small town in Canada, my very favorite mystery series?

  1. Penny’s writing is superlative. Her prose is beautiful to read even as it advances each thrilling plotline.
  2. I have such a crush on her lead character, Armand Gamache. Sure, he’s old enough to be my father, but he’s soooooo sexy and quietly commanding. Love me some Gamache.
  3. Her cast of characters is amazing. Each one is so fully drawn and real, I feel as if I’ve known them forever. And I care very much what happens to each of them as the series goes on.

But what I love most about Penny’s Three Pines series is that she’s written it as if she firmly believes her audience is intelligent. She doesn’t overexplain, or drop stupid red herrings, or repeat herself or pander to the lowest common denominator. She writes for smart readers and I respect that. Too few authors do that these days, especially in the mystery genre.

The new book is due out on August 30th  and if you’re all caught up with the series, make sure you’ve pre-ordered it.

But, if you want to start from the beginning, and I highly recommend that you do that with this particular series, here’s the order in which you should do your reading:

Still Life
A Fatal Grace
The Cruelest Month
A Rule Against Murder
The Brutal Telling
Bury Your Dead
A Trick of The Light

If you love a good mystery, and especially a good police procedural, you owe it to yourself to check out Louise Penny’s books. If you do, please let me know what you think!

I checked with my library and the book is on order but not in yet. I ordered a couple of her older novels while waiting. I love having an internet link with the library so I can order books from the comfort of home. Best wishes for a sleepy baby.

thanks for this recommendation! I really love a good mystery and especially a good police procedural. I will surely check out Louise Penny’s books because I’m always looking for a great new author. By the way, Elizabeth K Lee is one of my favorite authors and I warmly recommend her police novels. nice post!

I just wanted to say HI! And wow! I can’t believe the end is near already. I know you’ve (wisely) shelved the blog for a bit, but you will update us with baby news at some point, right? Oh, I do hope so.

Best wishes, sweet mama!

Just finished reading Still Life. I couldn’t put it down. Loved it! Thanks for passing on a new author. Hopefully by now you have had the little one and are resting up.

Put it on my list! Thank you. And a tip for someone about to have a baby…put Doc Martin and the Seven Up series on your Netflix queue. Great tv-watching for someone glued to the couch nursing. Best of luck!

If any of Meredith’s friends are reading this, can you give us an update on her post-delivery health? Is she all right? I hope the absence is just a baby hiatus–not anything more serious!

Oh, Gosh, Veronica! It NEVER occurred to me that people might think my lack of posts meant something was wrong.

We’re FINE. Our baby boy, Jackson, my family and I are doing great.

I’ll post an update with some photos soon. Just really enjoying time off with the babe.

Thanks for your concern!

That’s great to hear, Meredith! Congratulations, and welcome to the world, Jackson! I hope you enjoy your break from blogging and your time with your family!

Oh, thank goodness…
:-)
Been stopping by every couple of weeks to see if there has been an update on you, the baby, whether you’ve written many lists recently, how the Penelope in you is coping…
Glad to hear all is well.
Enjoy your new baby! Bet he still smells new-baby-ish. I miss that – mine all smell of shampoo these days…
