Assignment: organize the bookmarks in your browser

March 7, 2010

We’re all online all the time and we find so many yummy things that we don’t want to forget about. If you’re like me, those bookmarks pile up and you start to forget why you tagged them at all. All that clutter isn’t helpful. The good stuff can be lost that way.

Assignment #1: Take 10 minutes (just 10!) to organize the bookmarks in your browser.

Decide on 5-7 main categories and start putting links into those. You can sub-categorize later if necessary. And don’t be afraid to use your delete button. Maybe that recipe you loved a few months ago doesn’t match your eating goals now. Zap it!

Assignment #2: if 10 minutes didn’t get all your bookmarks organized, set a reminder on your calendar to do this once a week for the next month.

Ten bucks says, after that, your bookmarks will no longer be such a tangled mess.

Penelope Tip: After I started this website, I naturally wanted to start keeping up with more and more blogs. Given that they all offered different ways of keeping informed about their latest posts, pretty soon, my blog follow system was inefficient and frustrating.

Finally (I know, I’m so late to this party!) I discovered that iGoogle makes it really easy. You just create your own iGoogle page and then you can enter any URL and it will update you on the posts for that site.  I’ve now switched completely away from MyYahoo for my daily news/celebrity gossip fix and am using iGoogle exclusively. I have a page for “News” a page for “Entertainment News”, a page for “Business” and a page devoted to my favorite blogs. I love having a one-stop shop for all of these important links.

My favorite way to organize links is through delicious.com. If you’re not familiar – you tag websites, so instead of keeping your website in one called “organization, or example, I could tag it under organization, storage_solutions, and projects_to_do. That being said, my list still tends to get cluttered… but at least my clutter is easier to find than in my old system!

I don’t read blogs through my bookmarks. There are just too many “favorites” to click on each one to see if it has a new posting. I read blogs through my Blogger’s Dashboard (it shows the latest post for each blog) and if I really like an article/site/project, I save it in under my Bookmarks. :)

I use Boomarks for temporary finds. Things I want to ponder for a little bit to decide if it’s a long-time keeper. If the Bookmarked item makes the cut, then I put it in my EverNote. If you don’t know about EverNote.com, you might really like it. I take photos with my cell phone of registration numbers and send them to my EverNote registration number notebook. I also have a notebook for decorating ideas, crafting ideas and cool stuff I’d like to own. I think it’s a great service and it’s free. From my gushing you’d think I worked for them, but I’m not affiliated with them in any way.

I like to keep all the blogs I like to read (like yours) in my Google Reader and keep a constant tab open to it in my browser. I like how I can click on the blog name and the blog opens in a new tab or click on the title of a blog post and the post opens in a new tab so I can easily leave a comment.

I’ll have to check out iGoogle. Thanks!

I use Google Reader too. I will have to checkout EverNote, as that sounds cool. I just cleaned out my bookmarks. Thanks for the nudge, friend!

I love using bookmarks for ideas for future posts. Bookmarks are also perfect for organizing all of the manuals for your electronics. Since manuals are so cumbersome for your gadgets, make sure you can find them online–once you do, put them all under one bookmark and you can toss all the paper clutter.

This is fabulous! I’m working on it now. Thanks for the reminder. I can already breathe more freely knowing I don’t just have a bunch of junk bookmarked, but that it’s relevant, make-me-smile kinda material.

Love the idea of iGoogle. I currently use flock for blogs and facebook and twitter updates, but would love to see something more organized I will have to try it.
