Fox Splitter: a useful Firefox browsing tool

June 13, 2010

Recently, I installed the suggested upgrade for my Firefox internet browser and, in doing that, stumbled upon this very cool “add on”, called Fox Splitter.

Fox Splitter allows you to tile your tabs in one window. Very useful for working in two websites at one time.

For example, I like to have my live blog and my WordPress Dashboard open simultaneously as I write new posts or futz with sidebar content. The image below demonstrates one way you can do use this tool, but you have lots of options.

I’ve been using this add-on for a few weeks now and love it. It saves me time switching between tabs and having to reorient myself each time.

Tell me. Do you have any tools or add-ons that you use that make your browsing time more fun or efficient? If so, let us know!

By the way, please, please, please…if you still use Internet Explorer, switch to Firefox. I beg you. Read here why your web designer will love you forever for making the switch. But, even more, you’ll be amazed at how many fewer problems you’ll have as you travel the internet. Promise.

Oh I forgot to say I love using FLOCK to keep my reader, facebook and other social media updates displayed on one page. I can go down the list and read, glance et at what his happening quickly, it makes me seem more in tune then I really am!

I’ve been a Firefox user for a few years now – no way I could ever go back to IE. I cringe when I have to use it at work. I’m still exploring the world of apps w/ Firefox, this one looks like it’ll be huge time saver for me. I do the same thing now using Windows 7 drag and snap thing but I have to open two separate windows. All in one will be so much easier.

I never use internet explorer anymore. I have Firefox on my comp but i prefer to use Safari on the Mac. The Fox Splitter sounds very cool though :)

that’s pretty great. didn’t know that existed. will have to check it out tonight. as i work on a mac i always have all pages available at one click but they are still separated and divided. this split seems to be a fabulous idea.

Such a timely post for me – I’ve been thinking about switching from explorer and I’ve been hearing good things about Firefox….sounds like I need to do it PRONTO :) !!

Here are my favorite Firefox addons for organizing and simplifying (I tried adding links to mozilla but it thought my comment was spam. Sorry – you’re going to have to search for them):
Brief. Shows my RSS feeds links in a sidebar. I can view the entire list and click to read a post or mark it read.

Read It Later. If I spot a link I’d like to check out – but not right now, to keep myself on-focus, I can right-click and add it to my Read It Later list. Keeps my bookmarks clean and keeps me from getting too distracted.

And don’t forget about tools like Adblock Plus and NoScript for safer browsing!

LOVE this! I’m so thrilled about this that I’ve already downloaded it and have used it as I work on Monday Morning Knits!

This made so much sense I am wondering why I did not see it or start using it when my good ol boy told me to. :) Thanks Penelope

At my office (er, in my cube), we have two screens on our computers. Now, I can’t imagine going back. If i downloaded this it would be perhaps the only way I could handle it. Now I NEED to be able to see two things at once. Technology is really obliterating my attention span and ability to focus. Sigh.

@ Carmen: great tips. I’m looking into these, now. Thanks!

I’m a google chrome gal. Maybe I should give this a try!

LOVE FIREFOX! I haven’t tried the splitter though. There is a timer add on that is useful to not get carried away with my time online. I also use Cool Previews that opens a little window about links to preview where that link will take you.

I am a Firefox addict! I am so excited about this tip because I do exactly what you said, switch between dashboard and my blogs. Thank you for this.

I couldn’t live without Better GReader. It allows me to comment on blogs from directly in the reader.

Also, the All-in-One-Sidebar shows you all of your downloads, plugins, extensions and more.

Wow. Thanks for sharing this! This makes updating my blog so much easier. No more flipping back and forth or getting the wrong tab. This add on is a time and frustration saver!
