Martha Does Christmas Cookies: and, Why I like Martha Better Post-Prison

December 14, 2009

Post-prison Martha Stewart is somehow more palatable to me. Not sure why. She bugged me before, but now she’s doing some really nice stuff on her show and in her magazines and doesn’t seem so full of herself. Guess a little bit of incarceration will do that to ya. Brings you down a notch, I would imagine.

This year she’s doing some super cute things if you’re giving gifts made or baked by hand for the holidays. Making Christmas Cookies? She’s got you covered.

Fair warning to Penelopes reading at work: every page of Martha’s website opens with a video with sound that immediately starts playing when you open the page. My suggestion is to turn off your volume now, so you can surf the following links quietly.

You can go into Michael’s and buy several different types of boxes, all heartstoppingly gorgeous, to give all manner of cookies, candies and other treats.

Cutest thing I’ve seen today? These boxes that enable you to send home a single piece of pie with your guests. That’s so Penelope! It’s a free template so anyone can do it. She gives you the template and the step-by-step instructions.

I just saw her full line of craft and scrapbooking supplies at Michael’s and almost shelled out money for glitter, for heaven’s sake. I hate glitter. I don’t scrapbook. Yet, I wanted that darn glitter. That’s how pretty her stuff is nowadays.

Glad you’re back, Martha!

Your website is beautiful! Remember when we read the unauthorized Martha biography (like a thousand years ago..). Funny stuff…

Oh wow, that piece-o-pie toter is darling. Might just have to try that. Thanks for the tip!

Hi there!

While I did love Martha, even before her prison time, I totally understand what you mean and love the change that’s come over her now.

I LOVE each of these ideas – especially the single pie servings and the little cookie houses. One thing I don’t like about the Martha Empire is, if you’ve been reading for years, you are bound to see many things come back again and again in her magazines. But I guess this happens with clothes and everything else, too, so it’s to be expected. That is the amazing thing about Martha, though. She knows what works, and what will continue to work. And she works it!!!

I’m right there with you on the glitter! I was pining for the 24 pack of Essential Glitter Colors (who knew there were ESSENTIAL colors when it came to glitter!!??) when I discovered a coupon for 50% off one MS product at Michael’s in my Dec issue of MS. I am now the proud owner of 24 little vials of glitter. I haven’t even opened them yet. It brings me joy just to look at them (a tad embarrassing to admit)!

@Susan: I know what you mean, I love Real Simple magazine, but sometimes, just sometimes, I feel like the content is “coming back around”. I know it must be so hard to always keep things new. And re Martha, she’s a piece of work. I’m just positive she’s not the nicest woman ever on a personal level, but, there’s part of me that so admires her flat-out tenacity, you know? And, you’re so right, the lady knows what works.

@Whitney: See? THIS is why I started Penelope Loves Lists. Because I just knew that there were other people out there who’d buy a pack of glitter simply bc it was so darn pretty! I love that.
