My Panties Match My Vespa. Is that weird?

April 14, 2010

A little background, mixed with a healthy dose of confession. My husband and I have lots in common, but the mainstay of our marriage, other than our mutual love for our children and Thai food, is our shared obsession with cars. He loves old ones, I love brand-spanking, “new car smell” new ones.

Since we’ve been married (and we’re coming up on our 9th anniversary) we’ve owned more than 20 cars. Yes, I realize that seems excessive, but let me just say we are fiscally responsible, don’t have any credit card debt and are very careful to save for college, retirement, unforeseen expenses, etc. We don’t travel much, I don’t wear expensive jewelry. We just love cars and both get restless when we own them too long.

This would be very bad if just one of us had this problem. That would be a marital issue. With both of us, it’s a hobby!

So, given our love for 4-wheeled transportation, it was a surprise to both of us when we decided that maybe our next shared passion will just have 2 wheels. That’s right, we’re considering a Vespa!

It took me a while to get on board with this idea: the safety issues, the … well.. the safety issues mostly.

And then, this weekend, my husband took me to the Vespa showroom and I was hooked. Yes, the little buggers are cute as all get out, no question.

Here’s the one I want, for example:

Vespa_green

Cute, yes? Sure.

But, at the showroom, I found out that, not only can you buy the scooter, but, you can deck yourself out from tip to toe in Vespa gear. And, if you should want (and what Penelope wouldn’t?) you can have every single thing match. Your scooter matches your helmet, which matches your gloves, which matches your Vespa scarf (yes, there is such a thing!) which matches your…panties. {It’s true, my daily compulsiveness extends to my undergarments matching my outfit, which matches the background on my computer.}

So, this Vespa thing was just screaming my name.

Then, the two deciding factors. Number one, at the Vespa showroom, you can buy a perfectly Audrey Hepburn, fitted red raincoat specially made for riding. What’s special? Well, while it’s ever-so-stylish on the outside, its got custom riding pads inside, so you’re super protected while you’re on the road. That’s 10 Kinds of Awesome, right? Here I am modeling this coat.

THEN, they told me that they can paint anything I want on the side of the scooter.

“What? You mean, you could paint “Penelope” on the side of my celadon green Vespa? In the exact font and color from my logo?”

Sold.

I’m going to buy new undergarments now. And then, I should probably go get my motorcycle license, which is required. But, first things first.

OMG, i’m laughing – love this post!! (and btw, can i say ya look perfectly adorable on the vespa!) my husband has been wanting one for a few years and i have to say he’s starting to wear me down! they’re just so cute and great colors (of course i go for the design aspect!) but he’s got me with them being so great with gas mileage….now if only we could get rid of winter so we could ride it year round :)

I have a scooter – not a vespa – but a lovely little yamaha. I love it and rode it everywhere before Daughter was born, well, 9 months before Daughter was born. You’ll love it, and just be cautious and smart. A friend has a red vespa for sale cheap if you want to drive it home from Minneapolis!

Meredith April 14, 2010 at 11:56 am

@Jenn: thanks for the heads up. Given that I live in the SF Bay Area, the ride form Minneapolis seems a bit daunting, but good to know Vespas can be had for cheap!

And don’t worry, we’ll be very, very cautious and safe.

I’m with you on the Vespa love. I was obsessed when I lived in the Northeast because having one would be both practical and fun. Now that I’m in Tennessee, though, I worry that I’d be nothing but a splat on the side of a super-sized Hummer or Nissan Titan. I’ll have to live vicariously through you and your perfectly padded patootie.

I hate you & I want one now! You must post many pics of you and all of your gear when it happens!

Kimberly April 14, 2010 at 12:26 pm

How adorable are youuu?!?!? I just loved this post. I want a Vespa BIG time!! Living in southern Cali with very little rain? It would be perfect for all my little errands I run without the boys… oh yeah, them. {Do they make a Vespa built for four?!?} I think the Audrey coat alone would sell me ;)

Melinda April 14, 2010 at 12:49 pm

You kill me…ya just kill me.

Laughing greally, really hard…

Melissa April 14, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Ok. Seriously, Mere…I think you’ve officially gone from acutely interested to insanely obsessed! BTW, how are you going to get you kids to school on that thing?!?! I can’t wait to see Mr. Penelope with his matching Vespa, coat and logo…

You are so cute! You know you’ll have to join a Vespa club, right? Consider the whole new social life?!

Robin April 14, 2010 at 7:13 pm

I live in the SF Bay Area! I’ll be on the lookout for you on your adorable Penelope Vespa! And yes – lots and lots of pics please :)

way to go lady! awesome. vespa is the only 2-wheel transportation that i would EVER consider driving. my dad has one that is 20-years old and it makes the most beautiful sound. i remember as a kid in italy: my dad driving, me as a 5 year old in the front, my brother in the back, parasol and bag with towels heading to the beach in summer. haha. YES! you should go get that vespa and make beautiful memories as well!

Meredith April 15, 2010 at 7:56 am

@Lou: that’s exactly the kind of Vespa experience we’re hoping for. Though, I worry it might be more easily had in Italy than here in the SF Bay area!

Bneato April 15, 2010 at 8:09 am

both my parents always leased cars so i grew to love that “new car feeling” (smell especially)!
good luck with you new wheels:)

Melanie April 15, 2010 at 7:42 pm

Oh my Lord! I love it! I love celadon green and it is so cute. I want one too. How fast do they go?

lou April 16, 2010 at 1:38 am

ah don’t worry. bay area, south italy – where there’s sun and beach this kind of experience can be made :-)

Gretchen April 16, 2010 at 4:02 am

That is hilarious! Absolutely love it.

Erin April 19, 2010 at 12:25 pm

Wow – you two are my husband! I’m not into cars, vehicles, etc. – which is good because right now we can only afford that hobby for one person! I’m hoping to see your logo-ed Vespa so I can shout a hello!

It never ceases to astonish me how, with a bit of extra trawling online, you can stumble on some of the most unique pages. It’s frustrating that more articles like this, aren’t ranked at the top when I look with yahoo online, I have added you to my favorites, I also have a buddy, that will really enjoy this blog, so ill send them, a link to your blog, as well. I am sure they will really like it.
