I SO do NOT have the go with the flow gene, but I am working on it. After just beginning to recover from foot surgery where I spent the last two months in bed, I have painfully learned that my perfect has to be adjusted. Our tree this year and all our decorations are not what we usually do and my shopping has all been done online, but it will all be good. I am going now to arrange my breakfast casserole for tomorrow morning, and just so you know, I will only have my happy face on tomorrow :)

@Melissa: good idea to get the grandparents involved in these kinds of decisions. Often, this stuff comes up when the whole fam's together.

@Melinda: I sometimes think I'll never master "go with the flow". I'm trying. I'm making it a formal practice, actually. But sometimes I wonder if I was just born without the "flowing" gene.

Fabulous ideas and ones I take to heart. For the first time EVER, I rallied myself to the point of a "go with the flow" attitude last Christmas and it made a world of difference as to the moods of my husband and children by the time we arrived at my parents. We were actually genuinely happy and full of good cheer.

The two things that helped the most were prepping the coffee in the press the night before as we like to sip while we open and pre-ordering Noah's bagels candy-cane shaped bagels to warm in the oven while the kids were scavenging through the loot. Add in various flavored schmears and fresh fruits and we had a perfect low-key breakfast after every scrap of paper was neatly put in garbage bag. Wow...are we that anal? Ahh, but I love hearing what Penelope does at the holidays for it just makes me feel a little more sane. Thanks for sharing, and I for one, am NOT putting my face on.

I love the prep advice. I'd not thought to discuss before had who is sitting where and whether or not the kids can get into things right then and there. I think I'm also going to let all the grandparents in on our decision so there is no confusion between anyone! BTW, I too have no preference as to whether or not my "face" is on when the gift-opening begins!
